2Y habiendo convenido con los obreros en un denario al día, los envió a su viña.

3Saliendo cerca de la hora tercera del día, vio a otros que estaban en la plaza desocupados;

4y les dijo: Id también vosotros a mi viña, y os daré lo que sea justo. Y ellos fueron.

5Salió otra vez cerca de las horas sexta y novena, e hizo lo mismo.

6Y saliendo cerca de la hora undécima, halló a otros que estaban desocupados; y les dijo: ¿Por qué estáis aquí todo el día desocupados?

7Le dijeron: Porque nadie nos ha contratado. Él les dijo: Id también vosotros a la viña, y recibiréis lo que sea justo.

8Cuando llegó la noche, el señor de la viña dijo a su mayordomo: Llama a los obreros y págales el jornal, comenzando desde los postreros hasta los primeros.

9Y al venir los que habían ido cerca de la hora undécima, recibieron cada uno un denario.

13Él, respondiendo, dijo a uno de ellos: Amigo, no te hago agravio; ¿no conviniste conmigo en un denario?

14Toma lo que es tuyo, y vete; pero quiero dar a este postrero, como a ti.

15¿No me es lícito hacer lo que quiero con lo mío? ¿O tienes tú envidia, porque yo soy bueno?

16Así, los primeros serán postreros, y los postreros, primeros; porque muchos son llamados, mas pocos escogidos.

17Subiendo Jesús a Jerusalén, tomó a sus doce discípulos aparte en el camino, y les dijo:

18He aquí subimos a Jerusalén, y el Hijo del Hombre será entregado a los principales sacerdotes y a los escribas, y le condenarán a muerte;

19y le entregarán a los gentiles para que le escarnezcan, le azoten, y le crucifiquen; mas al tercer día resucitará.

20Entonces se le acercó la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo con sus hijos, postrándose ante él y pidiéndole algo.

21Él le dijo: ¿Qué quieres? Ella le dijo: Ordena que en tu reino se sienten estos dos hijos míos, el uno a tu derecha, y el otro a tu izquierda.

22Entonces Jesús respondiendo, dijo: No sabéis lo que pedís. ¿Podéis beber del vaso que yo he de beber, y ser bautizados con el bautismo con que yo soy bautizado? Y ellos le dijeron: Podemos.

23Él les dijo: A la verdad, de mi vaso beberéis, y con el bautismo con que yo soy bautizado, seréis bautizados; pero el sentaros a mi derecha y a mi izquierda, no es mío darlo, sino a aquellos para quienes está preparado por mi Padre.

24Cuando los diez oyeron esto, se enojaron contra los dos hermanos.

25Entonces Jesús, llamándolos, dijo: Sabéis que los gobernantes de las naciones se enseñorean de ellas, y los que son grandes ejercen sobre ellas potestad.

26Mas entre vosotros no será así, sino que el que quiera hacerse grande entre vosotros será vuestro servidor,

27y el que quiera ser el primero entre vosotros será vuestro siervo;

28como el Hijo del Hombre no vino para ser servido, sino para servir, y para dar su vida en rescate por muchos.

So the last shall be first, and the first last--that is, "Take heed lest by indulging the spirit of these murmurers at the penny given to the last hired, ye miss your own penny, though first in the vineyard; while the consciousness of having come in so late may inspire these last with such a humble frame, and such admiration of the grace that has hired and rewarded them at all, as will put them into the foremost place in the end." for many be called, but few chosen--This is another of our Lord's terse and pregnant sayings, more than once uttered in different connections. (See Mat 19:30; Mat 22:14). The "calling" of which the New Testament almost invariably speaks is what divines call effectual calling, carrying with it a supernatural operation on the will to secure its consent. But that cannot be the meaning of it here; the "called" being emphatically distinguished from the "chosen." It can only mean here the "invited." And so the sense is, Many receive the invitations of the Gospel whom God has never "chosen to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth" (Th2 2:13). But what, it may be asked, has this to do with the subject of our parable? Probably this--to teach us that men who have wrought in Christ's service all their days may, by the spirit which they manifest at the last, make it too evident that, as between God and their own souls, they never were chosen workmen at all.
