1Aconteció en el mismo año, en el principio del reinado de Sedequías rey de Judá, en el año cuarto, en el quinto mes, que Hananías hijo de Azur, profeta que era de Gabaón, me habló en la casa de Jehová delante de los sacerdotes y de todo el pueblo, diciendo:

2Así habló Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, diciendo: Quebranté el yugo del rey de Babilonia.

3Dentro de dos años haré volver a este lugar todos los utensilios de la casa de Jehová, que Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia tomó de este lugar para llevarlos a Babilonia,

4y yo haré volver a este lugar a Jeconías hijo de Joacim, rey de Judá, y a todos los transportados de Judá que entraron en Babilonia, dice Jehová; porque yo quebrantaré el yugo del rey de Babilonia.

5Entonces respondió el profeta Jeremías al profeta Hananías, delante de los sacerdotes y delante de todo el pueblo que estaba en la casa de Jehová.

6Y dijo el profeta Jeremías: Amén, así lo haga Jehová. Confirme Jehová tus palabras, con las cuales profetizaste que los utensilios de la casa de Jehová, y todos los transportados, han de ser devueltos de Babilonia a este lugar.

7Con todo eso, oye ahora esta palabra que yo hablo en tus oídos y en los oídos de todo el pueblo:

8Los profetas que fueron antes de mí y antes de ti en tiempos pasados, profetizaron guerra, aflicción y pestilencia contra muchas tierras y contra grandes reinos.

9El profeta que profetiza de paz, cuando se cumpla la palabra del profeta, será conocido como el profeta que Jehová en verdad envió.

10Entonces el profeta Hananías quitó el yugo del cuello del profeta Jeremías, y lo quebró.

11Y habló Hananías en presencia de todo el pueblo, diciendo: Así ha dicho Jehová: De esta manera romperé el yugo de Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, del cuello de todas las naciones, dentro de dos años. Y siguió Jeremías su camino.

12Y después que el profeta Hananías rompió el yugo del cuello del profeta Jeremías, vino palabra de Jehová a Jeremías, diciendo:

13Ve y habla a Hananías, diciendo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Yugos de madera quebraste, mas en vez de ellos harás yugos de hierro.

14Porque así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: Yugo de hierro puse sobre el cuello de todas estas naciones, para que sirvan a Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, y han de servirle; y aun también le he dado las bestias del campo.

15Entonces dijo el profeta Jeremías al profeta Hananías: Ahora oye, Hananías: Jehová no te envió, y tú has hecho confiar en mentira a este pueblo.

16Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová: He aquí que yo te quito de sobre la faz de la tierra; morirás en este año, porque hablaste rebelión contra Jehová.

17Y en el mismo año murió Hananías, en el mes séptimo.

But, doubtless, the false prophet foretold Jeconiah's return (Kg2 24:12-15), to ingratiate himself with the populace, with whom Jeconiah was a favorite (see on Jer 22:24).

The rival claims of the true and the false prophet are thus put in the more prominent contrast.

Amen--Jeremiah prays for the people, though constrained to prophesy against them (Kg1 1:36). The event was the appointed test between contradictory predictions (Deu 18:21-22). "Would that what you say were true!" I prefer the safety of my country even to my own estimation. The prophets had no pleasure in announcing God's judgment, but did so as a matter of stern duty, not thereby divesting themselves of their natural feelings of sorrow for their country's woe. Compare Exo 32:32; Rom 9:3, as instances of how God's servants, intent only on the glory of God and the salvation of the country, forgot self and uttered wishes in a state of feeling transported out of themselves. So Jeremiah wished not to diminish aught from the word of God, though as a Jew he uttered the wish for his people [CALVIN].

prophets . . . before me--Hosea, Joel, Amos, and others. evil--a few manuscripts, read "famine," which is more usually associated with the specification of war and pestilence (Jer 15:2; Jer 18:21; Jer 27:8, Jer 27:13). But evil here includes all the calamities flowing from war, not merely famine, but also desolation, &c. Evil, being the more difficult reading, is less likely to be the interpolated one than famine, which probably originated in copying the parallel passages.

Jeremiah does not say that all are true prophets who foretell truths in any instance (which Deu 13:1-2, disproves); but asserts only the converse, namely, that whoever, as Hananiah, predicts what the event does not confirm, is a false prophet. There are two tests of prophets: (1) The event, Deu 18:22. (2) The word of God, Isa 8:20.

Thou hast broken . . . wood . . . thou shalt make . . . iron--Not here, "Thou hast broken . . . wood," and "I will make . . . iron" (compare Jer 28:16). The same false prophets who, by urging the Jews to rebel, had caused them to throw off the then comparatively easy yoke of Babylon, thereby brought on them a more severe yoke imposed by that city. "Yokes of iron," alluding to Deu 28:48. It is better to take up a light cross in our way, than to pull a heavier on our own heads. We may escape destroying providences by submitting to humbling providences. So, spiritually, contrast the "easy yoke" of Christ with the "yoke of bondage" of the law (Act 15:10; Gal 5:1).
