1Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:

2Hijo de hombre, di al príncipe de Tiro: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Por cuanto se enalteció tu corazón, y dijiste: Yo soy un dios, en el trono de Dios estoy sentado en medio de los mares (siendo tú hombre y no Dios), y has puesto tu corazón como corazón de Dios;

3he aquí que tú eres más sabio que Daniel; no hay secreto que te sea oculto.

4Con tu sabiduría y con tu prudencia has acumulado riquezas, y has adquirido oro y plata en tus tesoros.

5Con la grandeza de tu sabiduría en tus contrataciones has multiplicado tus riquezas; y a causa de tus riquezas se ha enaltecido tu corazón.

6Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Por cuanto pusiste tu corazón como corazón de Dios,

7por tanto, he aquí yo traigo sobre ti extranjeros, los fuertes de las naciones, que desenvainarán sus espadas contra la hermosura de tu sabiduría, y mancharán tu esplendor.

8Al sepulcro te harán descender, y morirás con la muerte de los que mueren en medio de los mares.

9¿Hablarás delante del que te mate, diciendo: Yo soy Dios? Tú, hombre eres, y no Dios, en la mano de tu matador.

10De muerte de incircuncisos morirás por mano de extranjeros; porque yo he hablado, dice Jehová el Señor.

11Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:

12Hijo de hombre, levanta endechas sobre el rey de Tiro, y dile: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Tú eras el sello de la perfección, lleno de sabiduría, y acabado de hermosura.

13En Edén, en el huerto de Dios estuviste; de toda piedra preciosa era tu vestidura; de cornerina, topacio, jaspe, crisólito, berilo y ónice; de zafiro, carbunclo, esmeralda y oro; los primores de tus tamboriles y flautas estuvieron preparados para ti en el día de tu creación.

14Tú, querubín grande, protector, yo te puse en el santo monte de Dios, allí estuviste; en medio de las piedras de fuego te paseabas.

15Perfecto eras en todos tus caminos desde el día que fuiste creado, hasta que se halló en ti maldad.

16A causa de la multitud de tus contrataciones fuiste lleno de iniquidad, y pecaste; por lo que yo te eché del monte de Dios, y te arrojé de entre las piedras del fuego, oh querubín protector.

17Se enalteció tu corazón a causa de tu hermosura, corrompiste tu sabiduría a causa de tu esplendor; yo te arrojaré por tierra; delante de los reyes te pondré para que miren en ti.

18Con la multitud de tus maldades y con la iniquidad de tus contrataciones profanaste tu santuario; yo, pues, saqué fuego de en medio de ti, el cual te consumió, y te puse en ceniza sobre la tierra a los ojos de todos los que te miran.

19Todos los que te conocieron de entre los pueblos se maravillarán sobre ti; espanto serás, y para siempre dejarás de ser.

20Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:

21Hijo de hombre, pon tu rostro hacia Sidón, y profetiza contra ella,

22y dirás: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: He aquí yo estoy contra ti, oh Sidón, y en medio de ti seré glorificado; y sabrán que yo soy Jehová, cuando haga en ella juicios, y en ella me santifique.

23Enviaré a ella pestilencia y sangre en sus calles, y caerán muertos en medio de ella, con espada contra ella por todos lados; y sabrán que yo soy Jehová.

24Y nunca más será a la casa de Israel espina desgarradora, ni aguijón que le dé dolor, en medio de cuantos la rodean y la menosprecian; y sabrán que yo soy Jehová.

25Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Cuando recoja a la casa de Israel de los pueblos entre los cuales está esparcida, entonces me santificaré en ellos ante los ojos de las naciones, y habitarán en su tierra, la cual di a mi siervo Jacob.

26Y habitarán en ella seguros, y edificarán casas, y plantarán viñas, y vivirán confiadamente, cuando yo haga juicios en todos los que los despojan en sus alrededores; y sabrán que yo soy Jehová su Dios.

Ezekiel ironically alludes to Ithbaal's overweening opinion of the wisdom of himself and the Tyrians, as though superior to that of Daniel, whose fame had reached even Tyre as eclipsing the Chaldean sages. "Thou art wiser," namely, in thine own opinion (Zac 9:2). no secret--namely, forgetting riches (Eze 28:4). that they can hide--that is, that can be hidden.

In the person of the king of Tyre a new trial was made of humanity with the greatest earthly advantages. But as in the case of Adam, the good gifts of God were only turned into ministers to pride and self. every precious stone--so in Eden (Gen 2:12), "gold, bdellium, and the onyx stone." So the king of Tyre was arrayed in jewel-bespangled robes after the fashion of Oriental monarchs. The nine precious stones here mentioned answer to nine of the twelve (representing the twelve tribes) in the high priest's breastplate (Exo 39:10-13; Rev 21:14, Rev 21:19-21). Of the four rows of three in each, the third is omitted in the Hebrew, but is supplied in the Septuagint. In this, too, there is an ulterior reference to Antichrist, who is blasphemously to arrogate the office of our divine High Priest (Zac 6:13). tabrets--tambourines. pipes--literally, "holes" in musical pipes or flutes. created--that is, in the day of thine accession to the throne. Tambourines and all the marks of joy were ready prepared for thee ("in thee," that is, "with and for thee"). Thou hadst not, like others, to work thy way to the throne through arduous struggles. No sooner created than, like Adam, thou wast surrounded with the gratifications of Eden. FAIRBAIRN, for "pipes," translates, "females" (having reference to Gen 1:27), that is, musician-women. MAURER explains the Hebrew not as to music, but as to the setting and mounting of the gems previously mentioned.

"The cherub consecrated to the Lord by the anointing oil" [FAIRBAIRN]. covereth--The imagery employed by Ezekiel as a priest is from the Jewish temple, wherein the cherubim overshadowed the mercy seat, as the king of Tyre, a demi-god in his own esteem, extended his protection over the interests of Tyre. The cherub--an ideal compound of the highest kinds of animal existence and the type of redeemed man in his ultimate state of perfection--is made the image of the king of Tyre, as if the beau ideal of humanity. The pretensions of Antichrist are the ulterior reference, of whom the king of Tyre is a type. Compare "As God . . . in the temple of God" (Th2 2:4). I have set thee--not thou set thyself (Pro 8:16; Rom 13:1). upon the holy mountain of God--Zion, following up the image. in . . . midst of . . . stones of fire--In ambitious imagination he stood in the place of God, "under whose feet was, as it were, a pavement of sapphire," while His glory was like "devouring fire" (Exo 24:10, Exo 24:17).

Zidon--famous for its fishery (from a root, Zud, "to fish"); and afterwards for its wide extended commerce; its artistic elegance was proverbial. Founded by Canaan's first-born (Gen 10:15). Tyre was an offshoot from it, so that it was involved in the same overthrow by the Chaldeans as Tyre. It is mentioned separately, because its idolatry (Ashtaroth, Tammuz, or Adonis) infected Israel more than that of Tyre did (Eze 8:14; Jdg 10:6; Kg1 11:33). The notorious Jezebel was a daughter of the Zidonian king.

"A brier," first ensnaring the Israelites in sin, and then being made the instrument of punishing them. pricking--literally, "causing bitterness." The same Hebrew is translated "fretting" (Lev 13:51-52). The wicked are often called "thorns" (Sa2 23:6).

The full accomplishment is yet future, when Israel, under Christ, shall be the center of Christendom; of which an earnest was given in the woman from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon who sought the Saviour (Mat 15:21, Mat 15:24, Mat 15:26-28; compare Isa 11:12). dwell safely-- (Jer 23:6). This is the last of the world kingdoms against which Ezekiel's prophecies are directed, and occupies the largest space in them, namely, the next four chapters.
