1David volvió a reunir a todos los escogidos de Israel, treinta mil.

2Y se levantó David y partió de Baala de Judá con todo el pueblo que tenía consigo, para hacer pasar de allí el arca de Dios, sobre la cual era invocado el nombre de Jehová de los ejércitos, que mora entre los querubines.

3Pusieron el arca de Dios sobre un carro nuevo, y la llevaron de la casa de Abinadab, que estaba en el collado; y Uza y Ahío, hijos de Abinadab, guiaban el carro nuevo.

4Y cuando lo llevaban de la casa de Abinadab, que estaba en el collado, con el arca de Dios, Ahío iba delante del arca.

5Y David y toda la casa de Israel danzaban delante de Jehová con toda clase de instrumentos de madera de haya; con arpas, salterios, panderos, flautas y címbalos.

6Cuando llegaron a la era de Nacón, Uza extendió su mano al arca de Dios, y la sostuvo; porque los bueyes tropezaban.

7Y el furor de Jehová se encendió contra Uza, y lo hirió allí Dios por aquella temeridad, y cayó allí muerto junto al arca de Dios.

8Y se entristeció David por haber herido Jehová a Uza, y fue llamado aquel lugar Pérez-uza, hasta hoy.

9Y temiendo David a Jehová aquel día, dijo: ¿Cómo ha de venir a mí el arca de Jehová?

10De modo que David no quiso traer para sí el arca de Jehová a la ciudad de David; y la hizo llevar David a casa de Obed-edom geteo.

11Y estuvo el arca de Jehová en casa de Obed-edom geteo tres meses; y bendijo Jehová a Obed-edom y a toda su casa.

12Fue dado aviso al rey David, diciendo: Jehová ha bendecido la casa de Obed-edom y todo lo que tiene, a causa del arca de Dios. Entonces David fue, y llevó con alegría el arca de Dios de casa de Obed-edom a la ciudad de David.

13Y cuando los que llevaban el arca de Dios habían andado seis pasos, él sacrificó un buey y un carnero engordado.

14Y David danzaba con toda su fuerza delante de Jehová; y estaba David vestido con un efod de lino.

15Así David y toda la casa de Israel conducían el arca de Jehová con júbilo y sonido de trompeta.

16Cuando el arca de Jehová llegó a la ciudad de David, aconteció que Mical hija de Saúl miró desde una ventana, y vio al rey David que saltaba y danzaba delante de Jehová; y le menospreció en su corazón.

17Metieron, pues, el arca de Jehová, y la pusieron en su lugar en medio de una tienda que David le había levantado; y sacrificó David holocaustos y ofrendas de paz delante de Jehová.

18Y cuando David había acabado de ofrecer los holocaustos y ofrendas de paz, bendijo al pueblo en el nombre de Jehová de los ejércitos.

19Y repartió a todo el pueblo, y a toda la multitud de Israel, así a hombres como a mujeres, a cada uno un pan, y un pedazo de carne y una torta de pasas. Y se fue todo el pueblo, cada uno a su casa.

20Volvió luego David para bendecir su casa; y saliendo Mical a recibir a David, dijo: ¡Cuán honrado ha quedado hoy el rey de Israel, descubriéndose hoy delante de las criadas de sus siervos, como se descubre sin decoro un cualquiera!

21Entonces David respondió a Mical: Fue delante de Jehová, quien me eligió en preferencia a tu padre y a toda tu casa, para constituirme por príncipe sobre el pueblo de Jehová, sobre Israel. Por tanto, danzaré delante de Jehová.

22Y aun me haré más vil que esta vez, y seré bajo a tus ojos; pero seré honrado delante de las criadas de quienes has hablado.

Besides, a great concourse of people accompanied them out of veneration for the sacred article. The journey to Baale, which is related (Ch1 13:6), is here presupposed, and the historian describes the course of the procession from that place to the capital.

UZZAH SMITTEN. (Sa2 6:6-11) they came to Nachon's threshing-floor--or Chidon's (Ch1 13:9). The Chaldee version renders the words, "came to the place prepared for the reception of the ark," that is, near the city of David (Sa2 6:13). the oxen shook it--or, "stumbled" (Ch1 13:9). Fearing that the ark was in danger of being overturned, Uzzah, under the impulse of momentary feeling, laid hold of it to keep it steady. Whether it fell and crushed him, or some sudden disease attacked him, he fell dead upon the spot. This melancholy occurrence not only threw a cloud over the joyous scene, but entirely stopped the procession; for the ark was left where it then was, in the near neighborhood of the capital. It is of importance to observe the proportionate severity of the punishments attending the profanation of the ark. The Philistines suffered by diseases, from which they were relieved by their oblations, because the law had not been given to them [Sa1 5:8-12]; the Bethshemites also suffered, but not fatally [Sa1 6:19]; their error proceeded from ignorance or inadvertency. But Uzzah, who was a Levite, and well instructed, suffered death for his breach of the law. The severity of Uzzah's fate may seem to us too great for the nature and degree of the offense. But it does not become us to sit in judgment on the dispensations of God; and, besides, it is apparent that the divine purpose was to inspire awe of His majesty, a submission to His law, and a profound veneration for the symbols and ordinances of His worship.

David was afraid of the Lord that day, &c.--His feelings on this alarming judgment were greatly excited on various accounts, dreading that the displeasure of God had been provoked by the removal of the ark, that the punishment would be extended to himself and people, and that they might fall into some error or neglect during the further conveyance of the ark. He resolved, therefore, to wait for more light and direction as to the path of duty. An earlier consultation by Urim would have led him right at the first, whereas in this perplexity and distress, he was reaping the fruits of inconsideration and neglect.

(Sa2 6:12-19) it was told king David, saying, The Lord hath blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God--The lapse of three months not only restored the agitated mind of the monarch to a tranquil and settled tone, but led him to a discovery of his former error. Having learned that the ark was kept in its temporary resting-place not only without inconvenience or danger, but with great advantage, he resolved forthwith to remove it to the capital, with the observance of all due form and solemnity (Ch1 15:1-13). It was transported now on the shoulders of the priests, who had been carefully prepared for the work, and the procession was distinguished by extraordinary solemnities and demonstrations of joy.

David danced before the Lord--The Hebrews, like other ancient people, had their sacred dances, which were performed on their solemn anniversaries and other great occasions of commemorating some special token of the divine goodness and favor. with all his might--intimating violent efforts of leaping, and divested of his royal mantle (in a state of undress), conduct apparently unsuitable to the gravity of age or the dignity of a king. But it was unquestionably done as an act of religious homage, his attitudes and dress being symbolic, as they have always been in Oriental countries, of penitence, joy, thankfulness, and devotion. [See on Ch1 15:27.]
