1Cuando Jehová tu Dios te haya introducido en la tierra en la cual entrarás para tomarla, y haya echado de delante de ti a muchas naciones, al heteo, al gergeseo, al amorreo, al cananeo, al ferezeo, al heveo y al jebuseo, siete naciones mayores y más poderosas que tú,

2y Jehová tu Dios las haya entregado delante de ti, y las hayas derrotado, las destruirás del todo; no harás con ellas alianza, ni tendrás de ellas misericordia.

3Y no emparentarás con ellas; no darás tu hija a su hijo, ni tomarás a su hija para tu hijo.

4Porque desviará a tu hijo de en pos de mí, y servirán a dioses ajenos; y el furor de Jehová se encenderá sobre vosotros, y te destruirá pronto.

5Mas así habéis de hacer con ellos: sus altares destruiréis, y quebraréis sus estatuas, y destruiréis sus imágenes de Asera, y quemaréis sus esculturas en el fuego.

6Porque tú eres pueblo santo para Jehová tu Dios; Jehová tu Dios te ha escogido para serle un pueblo especial, más que todos los pueblos que están sobre la tierra.

7No por ser vosotros más que todos los pueblos os ha querido Jehová y os ha escogido, pues vosotros erais el más insignificante de todos los pueblos;

8sino por cuanto Jehová os amó, y quiso guardar el juramento que juró a vuestros padres, os ha sacado Jehová con mano poderosa, y os ha rescatado de servidumbre, de la mano de Faraón rey de Egipto.

9Conoce, pues, que Jehová tu Dios es Dios, Dios fiel, que guarda el pacto y la misericordia a los que le aman y guardan sus mandamientos, hasta mil generaciones;

10y que da el pago en persona al que le aborrece, destruyéndolo; y no se demora con el que le odia, en persona le dará el pago.

11Guarda, por tanto, los mandamientos, estatutos y decretos que yo te mando hoy que cumplas.

12Y por haber oído estos decretos y haberlos guardado y puesto por obra, Jehová tu Dios guardará contigo el pacto y la misericordia que juró a tus padres.

13Y te amará, te bendecirá y te multiplicará, y bendecirá el fruto de tu vientre y el fruto de tu tierra, tu grano, tu mosto, tu aceite, la cría de tus vacas, y los rebaños de tus ovejas, en la tierra que juró a tus padres que te daría.

14Bendito serás más que todos los pueblos; no habrá en ti varón ni hembra estéril, ni en tus ganados.

15Y quitará Jehová de ti toda enfermedad; y todas las malas plagas de Egipto, que tú conoces, no las pondrá sobre ti, antes las pondrá sobre todos los que te aborrecieren.

16Y consumirás a todos los pueblos que te da Jehová tu Dios; no los perdonará tu ojo, ni servirás a sus dioses, porque te será tropiezo.

17Si dijeres en tu corazón: Estas naciones son mucho más numerosas que yo; ¿cómo las podré exterminar?

18no tengas temor de ellas; acuérdate bien de lo que hizo Jehová tu Dios con Faraón y con todo Egipto;

19de las grandes pruebas que vieron tus ojos, y de las señales y milagros, y de la mano poderosa y el brazo extendido con que Jehová tu Dios te sacó; así hará Jehová tu Dios con todos los pueblos de cuya presencia tú temieres.

20También enviará Jehová tu Dios avispas sobre ellos, hasta que perezcan los que quedaren y los que se hubieren escondido de delante de ti.

21No desmayes delante de ellos, porque Jehová tu Dios está en medio de ti, Dios grande y temible.

22Y Jehová tu Dios echará a estas naciones de delante de ti poco a poco; no podrás acabar con ellas en seguida, para que las fieras del campo no se aumenten contra ti.

23Mas Jehová tu Dios las entregará delante de ti, y él las quebrantará con grande destrozo, hasta que sean destruidas.

24Él entregará sus reyes en tu mano, y tú destruirás el nombre de ellos de debajo del cielo; nadie te hará frente hasta que los destruyas.

25Las esculturas de sus dioses quemarás en el fuego; no codiciarás plata ni oro de ellas para tomarlo para ti, para que no tropieces en ello, pues es abominación a Jehová tu Dios;

26y no traerás cosa abominable a tu casa, para que no seas anatema; del todo la aborrecerás y la abominarás, porque es anatema.

thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them--This relentless doom of extermination which God denounced against those tribes of Canaan cannot be reconciled with the attributes of the divine character, except on the assumption that their gross idolatry and enormous wickedness left no reasonable hope of their repentance and amendment. If they were to be swept away like the antediluvians or the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, as incorrigible sinners who had filled up the measure of their iniquities, it mattered not to them in what way the judgment was inflicted; and God, as the Sovereign Disposer, had a right to employ any instruments that pleased Him for executing His judgments. Some think that they were to be exterminated as unprincipled usurpers of a country which God had assigned to the posterity of Eber and which had been occupied ages before by wandering shepherds of that race, till, on the migration of Jacob's family into Egypt through the pressure of famine, the Canaanites overspread the whole land, though they had no legitimate claim to it, and endeavored to retain possession of it by force. In this view their expulsion was just and proper. The strict prohibition against contracting any alliances with such infamous idolaters was a prudential rule, founded on the experience that "evil communications corrupt good manners" [Co1 15:33], and its importance or necessity was attested by the unhappy examples of Solomon and others in the subsequent history of Israel.

thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, &c.--The removal of the temples, altars, and everything that had been enlisted in the service, or might tend to perpetuate the remembrance, of Canaanite idolatry, was likewise highly expedient for preserving the Israelites from all risk of contamination. It was imitated by the Scottish Reformers, and although many ardent lovers of architecture and the fine arts have anathematized their proceedings as vandalism, yet there was profound wisdom in the favorite maxim of Knox--"pull down the nests, and the rooks will disappear."

For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God--that is, set apart to the service of God, or chosen to execute the important purposes of His providence. Their selection to this high destiny was neither on account of their numerical amount (for, till after the death of Joseph, they were but a handful of people); nor because of their extraordinary merits (for they had often pursued a most perverse and unworthy conduct); but it was in consequence of the covenant or promise made with their pious forefathers; and the motives that led to that special act were such as tended not only to vindicate God's wisdom, but to illustrate His glory in diffusing the best and most precious blessings to all mankind.

Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day--In the covenant into which God entered with Israel, He promised to bestow upon them a variety of blessings so long as they continued obedient to Him as their heavenly King. He pledged His veracity that His infinite perfections would be exerted for this purpose, as well as for delivering them from every evil to which, as a people, they would be exposed. That people accordingly were truly happy as a nation, and found every promise which the faithful God made to them amply fulfilled, so long as they adhered to that obedience which was required of them. The testimony of Moses is confirmed by the reports of many modern writers, who tell us that, notwithstanding its equal temperature and sereneness, that country has some indigenous maladies which are very malignant, such as ophthalmia, dysentery, smallpox, and the plague.

lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee--(See on Exo 23:29). The omnipotence of their Almighty Ruler could have given them possession of the promised land at once. But, the unburied corpses of the enemy and the portions of the country that might have been left desolate for a while, would have drawn an influx of dangerous beasts.
