1Vino a mí palabra de Jehová en el año noveno, en el mes décimo, a los diez días del mes, diciendo:

2Hijo de hombre, escribe la fecha de este día; el rey de Babilonia puso sitio a Jerusalén este mismo día.

3Y habla por parábola a la casa rebelde, y diles: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Pon una olla, ponla, y echa también en ella agua;

4junta sus piezas de carne en ella; todas buenas piezas, pierna y espalda; llénala de huesos escogidos.

5Toma una oveja escogida, y también enciende los huesos debajo de ella; haz que hierva bien; cuece también sus huesos dentro de ella.

6Pues así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: ¡Ay de la ciudad de sangres, de la olla herrumbrosa cuya herrumbre no ha sido quitada! Por sus piezas, por sus piezas sácala, sin echar suerte sobre ella.

7Porque su sangre está en medio de ella; sobre una piedra alisada la ha derramado; no la derramó sobre la tierra para que fuese cubierta con polvo.

8Habiendo, pues, hecho subir la ira para hacer venganza, yo pondré su sangre sobre la dura piedra, para que no sea cubierta.

9Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: ¡Ay de la ciudad de sangres! Pues también haré yo gran hoguera,

10multiplicando la leña, y encendiendo el fuego para consumir la carne y hacer la salsa; y los huesos serán quemados.

11Asentando después la olla vacía sobre sus brasas, para que se caldee, y se queme su fondo, y se funda en ella su suciedad, y se consuma su herrumbre.

12En vano se cansó, y no salió de ella su mucha herrumbre. Solo en fuego será su herrumbre consumida.

13En tu inmunda lujuria padecerás, porque te limpié, y tú no te limpiaste de tu inmundicia; nunca más te limpiarás, hasta que yo sacie mi ira sobre ti.

14Yo Jehová he hablado; vendrá, y yo lo haré. No me volveré atrás, ni tendré misericordia, ni me arrepentiré; según tus caminos y tus obras te juzgarán, dice Jehová el Señor.

15Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:

16Hijo de hombre, he aquí que yo te quito de golpe el deleite de tus ojos; no endeches, ni llores, ni corran tus lágrimas.

17Reprime el suspirar, no hagas luto de mortuorios; ata tu turbante sobre ti, y pon tus zapatos en tus pies, y no te cubras con rebozo, ni comas pan de enlutados.

18Hablé al pueblo por la mañana, y a la tarde murió mi mujer; y a la mañana hice como me fue mandado.

19Y me dijo el pueblo: ¿No nos enseñarás qué significan para nosotros estas cosas que haces?

20Y yo les dije: La palabra de Jehová vino a mí, diciendo:

21Di a la casa de Israel: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: He aquí yo profano mi santuario, la gloria de vuestro poderío, el deseo de vuestros ojos y el deleite de vuestra alma; y vuestros hijos y vuestras hijas que dejasteis caerán a espada.

22Y haréis de la manera que yo hice; no os cubriréis con rebozo, ni comeréis pan de hombres en luto.

23Vuestros turbantes estarán sobre vuestras cabezas, y vuestros zapatos en vuestros pies; no endecharéis ni lloraréis, sino que os consumiréis a causa de vuestras maldades, y gemiréis unos con otros.

24Ezequiel, pues, os será por señal; según todas las cosas que él hizo, haréis; cuando esto ocurra, entonces sabréis que yo soy Jehová el Señor.

25Y tú, hijo de hombre, el día que yo arrebate a ellos su fortaleza, el gozo de su gloria, el deleite de sus ojos y el anhelo de sus almas, y también sus hijos y sus hijas,

26ese día vendrá a ti uno que haya escapado para traer las noticias.

27En aquel día se abrirá tu boca para hablar con el fugitivo, y hablarás, y no estarás más mudo; y les serás por señal, y sabrán que yo soy Jehová.

The ninth year - This prophecy was given in the ninth year of Zedekiah, about Thursday, the thirtieth of January, A.M. 3414; the very day in which the king of Babylon commenced the siege of Jerusalem.

Set on a pot - The pot was Jerusalem; the flesh, the inhabitants in general; every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder, King Zedekiah and his family; the bones, the soldiers; and the setting on the pot, the commencement of the siege. The prophet was then in Mesopotamia; and he was told particularly to mark the day, etc., that it might be seen how precisely the spirit of prophecy had shown the very day in which the siege took place. Under the same image of a boiling pot, Jeremiah had represented the siege of Jerusalem, Jer 1:13. Ezekiel was a priest; the action of boiling pots was familiar to him, as these things were much in use in the temple service.

Let its contentions, divided counsels, and disunion be the means of increasing its miseries, רתח רתחיה rattach rethacheyha, let it bubble its bubbling; something like that of the poet: - "Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble: Fire burn, and cauldron bubble." Very like the noise made by ebullition, when a pot of thick broth, "sleek and slab," is set over a fierce fire. Such was that here represented in which all the flesh, the fat and the bones were to be boiled, and generally dissolved together.

For her blood is in the midst of her - She gloried in her idol sacrifices; she offered them upon a rock, where the blood should remain evident; and she poured none upon the ground to cover it with dust, in horror of that moral evil that required the blood of an innocent creature to be shed, in order to the atonement of the offender's guilt. To "cover the blood of the victim," was a command of the law, Lev 17:13; Deu 12:24.

In thy filthiness is lewdness - זמה zimmah, a word that denominates the worst kinds of impurity; adultery, incest, etc., and the purpose, wish, design, and ardent desire to do these things. Hers were not accidental sins, they were abominations by design, and they were the worse in her, because God had cleansed her, had separated the Israelites from idolatry and idolatrous nations, and by his institutions removed from them all idolatrous incentives. But they formed alliances with the heathen, and adopted all their abominations; therefore God would not spare them. See Eze 24:14.

Behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes - Here is an intimation that the stroke he was to suffer was to be above all grief; that it would be so great as to prevent the relief of tears. Curae leves loquuntur, graviores silent, is a well-accredited maxim in such cases. Superficial griefs affect the more easily moved passions; great ones affect the soul itself, in its powers of reasoning, reflecting, comparing, recollecting, etc., when the sufferer feels all the weight of wo. Put on thy shoes upon thy feet - Walking barefoot was a sign of grief. Cover not thy lips - Mourners covered the under part of the face, from the nose to the bottom of the chin. Eat not the bread of men - לחם אנשים lechem anashim, "the bread of miserable men," i.e., mourners; probably, the funeral banquet.

In that day shall thy mouth be opened - What is, When some one who shall have escaped from Jerusalem, having arrived among the captives, shall inform them of the destruction of the city, the temple, the royal family, and the people at large; till then he might suppress his tears and lamentations. And we find from Eze 33:21, that one did actually escape from the city, and informed the prophet and his brethren in captivity that the city was smitten. Thus he was not only a prophet to foretell such things, but he was also a sign or portent, shadowing them out by circumstances in his own person and family; and thus the prediction, agreeing so perfectly with the event, proved that the previous information was from the Lord.
